Book Three Argument

WHEN I SMOKE THE BONES OF WESTERN MEN

Aaron nears completion of his Galactic moon-ship. Vargus has returned from his mission to manipulate the small moons of Metis and Thebes to impact into the large moon of Europa. The first collision with Metis burned off some of Europa’s immense salt ocean. Metis also broke the crust of Europa and exposed the crust of the frozen planet.

Second, Thebes collision into Europa nearly shutters the planet into two pieces but they fuse again. The result, as planned is a further reduction of the salt oceans and the ignition of a nuclear fusion at the core of Europa. The result is shifting, continent size tectonic plates. Subsequent volcanism spews mineral and gas into a nascent atmosphere. The heat of volcanic activity combined with a heavy cloud cover slowly raises the temperature of the planet to liquefy the remaining oceans. The greenhouse gases commence a long warming process. Within a few years there will be the first domes of habitation established on the Europa – which is twice it previous size and contains a gravity more suited to human bodies. Europa is now raised in its elliptic further from Jupiter’s rays and appears as a twin moon with Callisto – so near are the two moons now to each other.

Book Three contains a play performed by the children of the crews. The entire Western world gathers in a large amphitheater to hear a story of the future success of their great project. But who wrote the play? Is it mere propaganda – or is it an actual prophecy of the future? Did Aaron write it or Antebbe – Aaron’s new consort from Callisto? Antebbe is a creature of strange new mental powers. Though born with Talon’s DNA – she appears to have a double dimension – not based only upon her material composition. Like Aaron, she is a creature of immense natural charisma and the humans stand aside as she enters any room.

She assists Aaron in his experiments with the human skeleton – to make a higher advancement in the human body and mind. But was this reengineering already performed thousands of years before – when Homo sapiens was made from Neanderthal man? The purpose now is to create a race of men able to survive in low gravity environments based on other forms of mineral – and not dependant only upon oxygen.

Finally, the 300 girls from several orphanages in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Ukraine slowly begin to mix two by two with the crews. The men see these women at the performance of the play and are nearly crazed with devotion. All insurgency is curbed – since Aaron has promised to release these women to the ship’s population of desperate human men. The young girls are also creatures that have been reformed by Aaron’s intensive re-education. They speak perfect English and know English, French, and German poets by heart. They not only have an exotic and charismatic Slavic beauty they are, strangely, willing to mate only with the men who support Aaron’s projects.

This changes everything in RingWorld. The human issue of these unions forever changes the nature of Homo sapiens. They have a lighter skeleton, larger eyes and brains – and exhibit a powerful spiritual perception of second sight. Yet this is only the beginning!
